LIFE SKILLS / SOFT SKILLS

Definition of Life Skills:  Abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life.

Definition of Soft Skills:  The ability to network with self and others in a manner conducive to bring about harmony and agreement, while navigating through life.

The purpose of the Life Skills / Soft Skills session is to bring about a positive adjustment to the participants' work ethics and habits.  This portion of URMAP training will transition the participant into long term employment stability.

Life Skills / Soft Skills is uniquely designed to address day-to-day barriers that keep participants from employment placement, advancement and job retention.  The intensive structure of the Life Skills / Soft Skills sessions provide an opportunity to develop appropriate case plan needs around each individual, while evaluating the overall effectiveness of the sessions for the group as a whole.

MATH & BLUE PRINT READING

The URMAP program utilizes an approach to training that builds the capacity of each participant.  The structure of the curriculum includes training provided by our partner, Richland Community College, through a unique math course with algebra components and a blue print reading class designed to assist participants in understanding various perspectives of construction.  Components of each class are as follows:

Math:

  • Decimals
  • Fractions
  • Percents
  • Pre-Algebra/Algebra
  • Geometry
Blue Print Reading:
  • Measurements & Scaling
  • Applied Mathematical Skills
  • Lines & Sketching
  • Multi-View Drawings
  • Dimensioning
  • Tolerancing / GD&T
  • Threads & Tap Drills
  • Drawing Notes & Welding Points

OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HEALTH ADMINISTRATION (OSHA)

This portion of the URMAP training curriculum includes OSHA safety training.  This class is taught by a Union Certified OSHA Instructor.  Examples of basic components for this session are as follows:

  • Electrical Safety
  • Confined Space
  • Fall Protection
  • Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

At completion of the OSHA session, each participant will receive official OSHA certification.

ON-THE-JOB-TRAINING (OJT)

OJT is another unique aspect of the curriculum.  This session allows each participant to gain applicable

"hands-on" construction experience.
Participants work with various crafts in order to expand their knowledge base and technical skill, as well as networking with specific trade business agents, training directors and past URMAP participants.  OJT allows each participant to gain applicable "hands-on" experience in different Union trades.

CPR/(AED)
Cardiac Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator

American Red Cross CPR and AED programs are designed to give you the confidence to respond in an emergency situation with breathing and cardiac skills that can save a life.

CNC Fundamentals

 (

computer numerical controlled)

This is an introduction to CNC machinery as it applies to the operator. CNC (computer numerical controlled) Fundamentals is a hands-on course in the setup, operation, and basic programming of CNC machines including both turning (lathes) and milling machines. Topics will include an introduction to basic CNC program codes, set up, tooling, and operation. The MDI mode will be utilized for manual axis control and basic machine functions. Work shift and tool offsets will be programmed. Offline programming will be used to create basic CNC programs. The programs will be downloaded, called up, edited, and tool path code graphically verified before being run. Machine operation will include basic fixturing, feed and speed rates, machine maintenance, and adjustments to meet part quality requirements.
